About Lesson

Introduction:

Every word in the English language has a job — a role it plays in a sentence. These roles are called parts of speech. Understanding them is the key to mastering grammar and writing clearly.

The 8 Parts of Speech:

1. Nouns – names of people, places, things, or ideas.

Example: Modiri, school, book, honesty

2. Pronouns – words that replace nouns.

Example: he, she, it, they, them

3. Verbs – action or state of being.

Example: run, jump, is, are, write

4. Adjectives – describe or give more information about nouns.

Example: tall, red, angry, three

5. Adverbs – describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

Example: quickly, very, well, silently

6. Prepositions – show the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word.

Example: under, above, next to, during

7. Conjunctions – link words, phrases, or clauses.

Example: and, but, or, because, although

8. Interjections – short exclamations or expressions.

Example: Wow! Ouch! Hey! Oh no!

Quick Exercise:

Identify the part of speech of each bolded word in the sentence:
